Autumn Study Day
We held our Autumn Study Day on 1st November at Reaseheath College.
Our speakers were excellent
Advolly Richmond, garden historian and author, told us about “A Short History of Flowers; The stories that shaped our gardens”
John Scrace, plant pathologist, told us about “Fabulous Fungi (and Malicious Moulds)”
Our next Study Day will be Friday, 21st February 2025 at Reaseheath College.
Spring Newsletter Issued
Our Spring Nesletter has been issued and this includes details of our Summer 2024 outings. We have an interesting programme of events which should be enjoyable – here’s hoping we get a bit of sunshine!
The events include:
- Groobarb’s Wild Farm – Friday, 21st June
- Ken Black’s Garden, Adswood – Friday, 28th June
- Thenford – Thursday, 18th July 2024
- Goldstone Hall & Sambrook Manor – Tuesday, 20th August
Winter Newsletter
Our Winter Newsletter is now available and this contains details of our next Study Day which will be on 23rd February.
We have two very interesting speakers for our Study Day. Emily Chandler will tell us about the Winter Garden at Dunham Massey and Ken Black will talk to us about clematis.
The Newsletter also contains reports on our October Study Day, so is well worth a read.
October Study Day
Details of our speakers for the October Study Day have been announced.
Our next Study Day is on 27th October at Reaseheath College.
Our lectures will be “’Making the most of your Garden” by Christine Walkden in the morning and in the afternoon, “Breathing New Life into Old Walls – restoring the walled kitchen garden at Haigh Hall” by Sylvia Travers.

Winter Newsletter
Our Winter Newsletter has been issed and incudes reports on our October Study Day plus details of our next Study Day which is on 24th February at Reaseheath College. Please see the Newsletters page if you would like to read it.
On 24th February our lectures will be ‘Salvias and Ornamental Grasses’ by Gordon Malt and ‘The Making of RHS Garden Bridgewater – plans and progress’ by Marcus Chilton-Jones, Curator of RHS Bridgewater.
Members and Guests are welcome.
February Study Day
We had a lovely Study Day on Friday, 25th February at Reaseheath College. It was wonderful to see so many of our members face-to-face again.
Our lectures were “How Plants Communicate” by Dr Tony Polwart and “Edible Landscaping” by Richard Smedley
Write-ups of the lectures for both of our speakers will be available in the Spring Newsletter which will be published in mid-April.
Our next study day is planned for 7th July – details will be published in April 2022.
Autumn Study Day
We had a lovely Study Day on Friday, 29th October at Reaseheath College. It was wonderful to see so many of our members face-to-face again.
Our two talks were “Recent Developments in Hydroponics and Intensive Crop Production” by Dr Paul Challinor and “Colour in the Leaf” by Anthony Norman of Conquest Plants
Reports of both talks will be available in the Winter Newsletter which will be published in late January.
Future Study Days – make a note in your diary:

- Thurday, 7th July 2022 at Reaseheath College
- Friday, 28th October 2022 (TBC) at Reaseheath College
Study Day – Friday, 19th February 2021
Our next study day will be on Friday, 19th February via Zoom. Our lectures are are:
- “A Quick Introduction to the Social History of Gardens” by Advolly Richmond, Garden, Landscape & Social Historian
- “The Evolution of Cholmondeley Castle Gardens” by Barry Grain, Head Gardener at Cholmondeley Castle
This promises to be an interesting day – read a bit more about our speakers on the “Events at Reaseheath” page.
October Study Day
The next Study Day at Reaseheath will be Friday 30th October. Our Speakers will be:
- Mick Brown from Chatsworth Gardens whose lecture will be “The Past, Present and Future of Chatsworth Gardens”
- John Scrace, freelance plant pathologist, whose lecture will be “The Invaders – the latest pest and disease threats to the UK”
That should be an interesting and varied day.
